CAN A BAG BECOME AN HEIRLOOM WITHOUT BEING EXPENSIVE?

CAN A BAG BECOME AN HEIRLOOM WITHOUT BEING EXPENSIVE?

What makes an heirloom?

Is it the price?

The rarity?

The name stamped onto it?

Or is it simply the fact that someone loved it enough to keep it?

We often imagine heirlooms as grand things.

Jewellery.

Watches.

Designer handbags.

Objects with a significant price attached to them.

But perhaps we have misunderstood what an heirloom really is.

An heirloom is not necessarily something expensive.

It is something that carries meaning.

It might be the bag your mother carried when she got her first job.

The one your grandmother took on every holiday.

The one you bought yourself before starting a new chapter of your life.

Its monetary value might be modest.

Its emotional value might be impossible to measure.

Because time does something strange to objects.

It gives them stories.

A small mark is no longer just a mark.

It becomes the memory of where you were when it happened.

A worn handle is no longer wear.

It is proof that the object was used, loved and lived with.

And perhaps this is why the idea of an heirloom feels so different from simply owning something
expensive.

An expensive product can be forgotten.

An inexpensive one can become irreplaceable.

The difference is not always what it cost.

It is what it meant.

This is also why longevity matters.

If something is going to become part of a family’s story, it needs the opportunity to remain
around long enough to become one.

It needs to be something you want to keep.

Something you can imagine carrying years from now.

Something that does not feel tied to a single season.

Perhaps the greatest compliment a product can receive is not:

“That must have been expensive.”

It is:

“Where did you get that?”

And then:

“I’ve had it for years.”

Because maybe that is the real definition of luxury.

Not the ability to buy something expensive.

But the ability to own something meaningful for a very long time.
