THE QUESTION THAT STARTED SARJAA

THE QUESTION THAT STARTED SARJAA

Why does luxury have to cost the earth?

Not rhetorically. Actually.

We asked this at the very beginning, before the first sketch, before the first sample, before any of it. And the more we sat with it, the more it refused to go away.

Because the answer, if you look at how the industry has operated for decades, is that it simply does not have to. It just always has.

Luxury fashion built its identity on exclusivity. On rarity. On the idea that the finest things in the world require the most from the world to produce them. Exotic skins. Animal hides. Materials sourced without question because the end product was beautiful enough to justify the cost.

But justified to whom?

Not to the animal. Not to the ecosystem. Not, if we are being honest, to the person carrying the bag once they know what went into making it.

There is a particular kind of dissonance that comes with holding something exquisite and knowing it came from harm. Most people push it down. The industry counts on that.

We were not willing to.

When Sarjaa began, the starting point was not aesthetics. It was not even materials. It was a refusal. A refusal to accept that beauty and ethics were mutually exclusive. That to have one, you had to sacrifice the other.

So we went looking for a different answer.

What we found was extraordinary. Cactus, grown in arid land, needing almost no water, no pesticides, no harm. Apple waste from the juicing industry, destined for disposal, transformed into something you carry for years. Pineapple fibre, a byproduct of a fruit harvest, becoming structure and texture and form.

None of this was easy to find. None of it was easy to work with. The early samples were wrong. The materials behaved differently than expected. There were months where it felt like the idea was more beautiful than the execution.

But that is what building something real feels like.

It is not a straight line. It is a series of questions followed by more questions. It is choosing the longer road because the shorter one leads somewhere you do not want to go.

Luxury does not have to cost the earth.

It never did. The industry just never had enough reason to find another way.

We think that reason exists now. In the women who are asking better questions before they buy. In the makers who are refusing the old shortcuts. In the quiet, persistent belief that what we create should leave the world at least as good as we found it.

That belief is what Sarjaa is built on. Every bag. Every name. Every choice of material. Every decision to start over when something does not meet the standard.

The question that started all of this still sits at the centre of everything we do.

We intend to keep answering it.

Love your style, love planet, love Sarjaa
